Brilliant, After Breakfast

A documentation of my discoveries in the wild.

26

Today, I am 26 years old.

I am half way done with my graduate program. I live in a cool city. I get to do what I love pretty much everyday — and it continues to be challenging and rewarding. I am surrounded by inspirational and loving colleagues, friends and family.

How luckier could a girl get?!

Looking forward to in the coming year:

-Finishing up my Pre-Thesis short film

-New York

-London

-Denver

-Harry Potter World + New Orleans road trip

-Writing and starting pre-production for my Thesis short film

-More adventures (to infinity)

Frost Flowers

I want to put this in a Sci-Fi film.

But would they be good or evil?

A Week of Inspiring, Bad-ass Women Filmmakers

This week has been a great week for female filmmakers.

1) As I mentioned earlier, Heather Courtney’s doc won an Emmy.

2) Women in Cinema held a Producers Panel with Rakeda Ervin, Caroline Conner and Megan Gilbride. They know where it’s at.

3) Megan Gilbride came to my Pre-thesis class to talk about producing in more depth, as well as sharing her wisdom and experience as a former RTF MFA Production grad student. She was also one of Heather Courtney’s producers on Where Soldiers Come From.

4) Just had a meeting with Susan Kirr, my mentor for the semester that I got through Women in Cinema. She’s a producer in Austin and it was just so inspiring to talk to her.

It can be so easy to get caught up in the mountain of work ahead of me, and the stress that goes along with it. But, it’s people like these ladies that remind me how much I love filmmaking and how much it really is worth it in the end.

It’s been a really great day.
—>Cherrywood coffeehouse + A free parking spot by campus + 2 high fives all before 9am.
—>Breakfast tacos in Pre-thesis + a visit from Megan Gilbride (producer extraordinaire).
—>Still need to meet with my DP and Producer team, but I think I may have locked my location!!!! Over the moon about this!
—>Coffee and work on the East Side with Lex.
—>Movie screening down time for History of FIlm.
—> Getting to a better place with my feature screenplay!

I would definitely call this a major win.

Where Soldiers Come From

As of last night, Where Soldiers Come From is now an Emmy Award winning documentary! The director, Heather Courtney, is an alumni from my MFA Production program. She came to visit and show us this film last year in my documentary production class. It’s so wonderful to see her hard work and amazing film being rewarded. I’m so proud to be a part of RTF!

Hero Talk: Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon won my heart with Buffy and Firefly. He took that nerd appeal to an even grander scale with the Avengers last summer. Pretty much every film or TV show he does makes me want to be a filmmaker even more (and also work on all his projects ever). And, now, he does it again with one of my favorite plays: A Joss Whedon retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.

I want to see this film SO BADLY, and I’m wishing, hoping, and putting positivity out there with all my might that he gets theatrical distribution!
